The Backporch Book Club: September Pick — Shield of Sparrows by Devney Perry
Our second official meeting of The Backporch Book Club was nothing short of magical! ✨ This month’s pick, Shield of Sparrows by Devney Perry, completely swept us off our feet. We laughed, cried, swooned, and could have talked for ten hours straight about this story (and honestly, we almost did).
From the very first page, we were captivated by Perry’s lush world-building and her ability to blend fantasy, emotion, and romance so seamlessly. The star of the show, of course, was Odessa — our fierce, brave, beautifully complex heroine. Watching her discover her own strength and self-worth as the story unfolded was inspiring and heartwarming. We adored how real and raw her growth felt.
And then there’s the Guardian… 😍 Grumpy, stoic, and completely swoon-worthy. He had just the right amount of mystery and tenderness that kept us all fanning ourselves between chapters. Devney Perry absolutely nailed the grumpy-meets-dreamy male lead — and we’re not sure we’ll recover anytime soon.
Between the twists, turns, and breathtaking magical moments, Shield of Sparrows was everything we wanted and more. We’re already counting down the days until book two releases next year! If we could have given this one six stars, we absolutely would have. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Our Book Club Night: A Touch of Magic ✨
To celebrate our love for this story, we transformed the table into a scene straight from the cover. A gleaming sword represented the Guardian, while a crown symbolized Odessa’s strength and courage. The wooden chargers gave a nod to the ancient trees of Treow, grounding our decor in the world Perry built so vividly.
Of course, no Backporch gathering is complete without themed cocktails! 🍸
We had two signature drinks:
The Odessa – bold, beautiful, and just a little bit mysterious (just like our heroine).
The Sparrow – light, sparkling, and served in the most adorable bird-shaped glasses, which each lady got to take home as a keepsake. 🐦
It was an evening filled with laughter, great conversation, and a shared love of storytelling — the perfect reflection of why we started The Backporch Book Club in the first place.

After diving deep into fantasy this month, we’re heading to Nantucket for a twisty, character-driven story that promises secrets, intrigue, and Hilderbrand’s signature touch of coastal charm. We can’t wait to cozy up with this one and see what discussions it sparks around the back porch.
We left the night still talking about our favorite scenes, favorite quotes, and theories for what’s to come in book two. Devney Perry has officially earned a forever spot on our bookshelf (and in our hearts). Our text group has been igniting with theories about what’s to come!
